The Shasta County Housing Authority (SCHA) administers the Department of Housing and Urban Development's Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program within Shasta County, outside the city limits of Redding.  The goal of the program is to assist eligible families in securing decent, safe, sanitary and affordable rental housing.  This is accomplished by providing rental subsidy payments directly to the landlord, on behalf of low-income families for any eligible unit of the family's choosing.  Approximately 644 families are assisted within SCHA jurisdiction, with a yearly cost of approximately $2.5 million.  Eligibility is determined once the family's name has come to the top of the waiting list.  Preferences are given to families and elderly or disabled single persons living within SCHA jurisdiction.
